Revelen’s Light – MTG Altered Art

Revelen’s Light is the day job of my wife Kate and myself: painting altered art on trading cards. (Almost exclusively Magic: The Gathering, but we’re always open to suggestion.) Whenever we have some free time from commissioned work, we paint a variety of cards which are then listed in our Ebay store. These are usually fairly straightforward extensions of the standard card art. Take a look, you might find something you like!

However, if you’re looking for a specific alter, we are always up for commissions. You can contact us below about your desired altered art, or read through some of our most frequently asked questions:

Pricing

The first question we get asked is often regarding pricing, and the answer is… It really depends. Here’s a list of our basic rates for common styles of alter, but other options are always on the table as well, obviously!

Simple Pop-over – $10-15 (USD)
These are the simplest of alters, generally. The original art stays the same, the card border remains intact, but some portion of the art is extended outside of the frame, creating a “popping over the edge” effect.

Border Extension – $17/$20 Modern/Old Borders (USD)
The next tier is the border extension, turning a standard card into a card with fully extended art. The original art remains the same, we simply extend it to the edges of the card, leaving the rules text box intact. Covering the name box at the top is an option.

PlainsInterior Extension – $25 (USD)
There’s also the possibility of the interior extension for Modern Bordered Cards, painting the original art down across the rules text box, creating a central, full art panel, while leaving the original borders of the card.

Full Extension – $30 (USD)
Here, we are again, simply extending the original art, but this time across the entire card, covering the rules text box. Again, either leaving the name box or covering it is possible, your choice. These are most common with basic lands, given the lack of rules text.

New Art – $50 (USD)
At this rate we paint completely new art within the normal art area of the card, leaving the original frame and text box uncovered.

Extended New Art – $55 (USD)
At this rate we paint completely new art extended to the edges of the card, leaving the rules text box uncovered.

New Full Art – $60 (USD)
Here, we are painting entirely new art, covering the whole card, including the rules text box. It’s usually a good idea to leave at least the name of the card, mana cost, and P/T visible, if you plan to play in any but the most casual of games, but the final choice is of course yours!

Other Stuff
Then of course, there’s a ton of possible alters that don’t fit neatly into all those catagories above… So, send us a message and we can figure it out!

Double-Sided Cards
Perhaps obviously, altering a double-faced (flip) card counts as one alter per side. For example, if you wanted a border extension done on both faces, that’s a total of two border extensions.

About Foils
Foils take a loooong time, but they are fun to paint, make no mistake! Foils take a bit longer than regular cards, as there’s a lot of careful layering and waiting for paint to fully dry that isn’t necessary on a regular card. Foil pricing is a simple doubling of whatever the standard rate would be. Also, not everything that’s possible on a regular card is possible with foil, but give us a shout if you’d like to talk about possibilities!

About Card Swaps

We have in the past swapped for cards, but lately it just hasn’t been possible for us to keep up with all of the commissions coming in and still paint up the traded cards, so unfortunately we’re avoiding swapping cards for alters for the time being.

How long does it take?

It really depends. We pretty much always have several commissions going at a time, so delays can vary, but we try not to get backed up more than a week or so at the most. Ideally, we start painting the day the cards you send us arrive, but depending on what else is on our plate, it can be longer. When you contact us about alters, we’ll let you know if we’ve got a pile of commissions ahead of you in the list!

Generally speaking though, for commissions of a few cards, you can expect us to have finished within a few days to a week of getting our hands on the cards. As soon as we’re done, we’ll send you some images to check out, and then send them on their merry way.

Do you do bulk commissions?

Yup! There’s no real limit on the size of your order, but depending on what other commissions we have going, a full EDH deck may end up taking a back seat to someone who only wants one or two simple alters, just so no one’s waiting a month for their one basic land, or something…

Payment Options

When you decide to commission something from us, we can just send a simple Paypal invoice to your paypal-associated email. If you don’t have Paypal, we can still send you an invoice that works with credit cards and assorted other methods.

Rules on Alter Legality

Technically yes, but it’s really all up to the judge. The upshot is that, with most alters, you’re probably fine at FNM, I wouldn’t bring them to the Pro-Tour, for everything else, check with the head judge first! Here are the official rules:

Latest DCI Policy on Tournament Legality:
MAGIC: THE GATHERING® TOURNAMENT RULES
Effective July 1, 2009
Section 3.3 Authorized Cards:

Artistic modifications are acceptable in sanctioned tournaments, provided that the modifications do not make the card art unrecognizable, contain substantial strategic advice, or contain offensive images. Artistic modifications also may not obstruct or change the mana cost or name of the card.

The Head Judge is the final authority on acceptable cards for a tournament
